I have seen those in boston before. and my place that i alive, its 520 sf with ii bedrooms. ii people live here so its not that small, the layout is pretty proficient (kitchen and living room is the aforementioned room, and front door goes straight to living room. if we had 3 people living here information technology will feel cramped.

If one of the 4 is your mother-in-law, you demand a lot of space equally will your wife. I cant speak for those with two kids... but if one can afford separate living areas for married man, married woman, and mother in law (mayhap kids instead if you take them), it tin help keep harmony.

Im in Tx.....then 4000+ sf is how we ascertain a lot of space....merely of class we dont have basements....equally many parts of the country.

Nosotros are a family of 5 and have 3br's, 2.5ba, living room, family room, dining room and a large eat-in kitchen. Total is ii,200sq.ft. Previously nosotros lived in a couple of other places. When nosotros had one kid we had 1,100 sq.ft. and that was plenty for u.s.a.. When we had ii kids we lived in a one,450 sq.ft. place and information technology felt spacious.

As others said though, it is really all about layout, not square footage, per se. Our firm is very well laid out for our purposes and I would accept our 2,200 over some others I have seen with 3,000. My in-laws own a gorgeous restored Victorian that is near 3,000 sq.ft., but the layout isn't so great and their firm feels smaller then mine. Ultimately it'due south all nearly how you use the infinite. We take tried to be infinite efficient, especially in the family room that doubles every bit our play room and in the kids bedrooms.

I believe that the space we need for a comfy life is

for 1 person: 450-550 sf
for a couple: 600-700 sf
family of three: two bedchamber, 750-900 sf
family of four (2 small kids): ii sleeping accommodation/two bath, 800-1100 sf

a 1000sf is quite spacious. big enough to have two adept sized bedroom, 2 bathroom and ane decent living area.

Of course many take different definition of comfort. Some needs a guestroom which is empty for 350 days of the year. Some call up that ane can't read in the same room he watches Goggle box.

A livingroom should be multi-purpose

dining
watch Goggle box
entertain visitors
reading
occasional work

Kids need to play video games? Inquire them to go to their bedroom. When they go to higher, they will share a room with roommate doing everything in that space. The thought of having a room for kids to play games and watch Idiot box is ridiculous.

4000 sf should exist for families with vii or eight kids. Cheaper housing doesn't mean you just but go equally big equally you lot can afford. But imagine the cleaning piece of work associated with a 4000sf firm

I have no children and live alone, and so I am not qualified to answer the question. But reading the question made me call up of my own childhood.

In 1953, my parents bought a three bedroom, 2 bath house in Bellevue, Washington for $15,500. About one,250 sq. ft. upstairs, with a basement 'rec room'. My two sisters shared a room until age 18 when they went to college. I shared a room with my older brother until he went to college. four kids shared 1 bathroom. We had a living room, dining room, kitchen, and the rec room. I am amazed today that people demand to have a bedroom and bath for each child, a family room, media room, 3 car garage, den or home function, etc. I never felt 'deprived' as a kid. Probably because everyone in the neighborhood had similar homes and like number of kids.

My dear parents, ages 87 and 88, nevertheless live in their $15,500 Clyde Colina habitation in Bellevue, WA. The properties around them have sold, been torn down, and turned into McMansions for the neighboring Microsoft workers. My Dad still has the cancelled checks, showing he paid his $88.30 mortgage payment every month until the day he paid off the house (we had a mortgage-burning party with a Wok).

I would think a 1,300 sq. ft. home is notwithstanding sufficient for a family of 4.

Is it how much do we need or how much would be nice? Need would exist pretty low, settlers lived in i room houses and did only fine, spending most time out of doors. How much would be squeamish is mostly an corporeality just to a higher place what yous can beget.

The smallest nosotros've had was 800 sq ft, a 2 bed 2 bath apartment. There was no dining room, there was a breakfast bar between the living room and kitchen, then we bought stools and ate there. The kids (both girls) shared a bedroom with bunkbeds, the kind of bunkbeds that have a desk, dresser and bookcase congenital into them. I had a small desk-bound that fit perfectly into a corner of the living room, and a big leather sectional couch and a couple of matching chairs.

Now nosotros have a 1450 sq ft firm, 3 bedroom two bath. Each kid has their own room, we accept a table in the kitchen to eat at and our dining room is used as our homeschool classroom, with a big function desk, bookshelves, and a couple of computers. We too have a computer nook, and a big garage that is mostly junk storage. I think I was happier with less space because we accumulated less junk. At present, every time someone is tired of something, they put it out into the garage and refuse to ever become rid of it.
